Mon, 08 Jan 2007 For Christmas I bought myself an AL Tech MG-35, basically a USB 3.5" hard drive enclosure that is also a media player. It's got coax and optical digital out; component, composite, and S-video; and is equipped with an Ethernet interface. It doesn't come with a hard drive (which was great for me, since I had an extra 160 Gb drive lying around), but in default trim it can mount NFS volumes and play all kinds of audio and video formats. The best part, though, is that it runs Linux and its firmware is therefore GPLedand there's a Yahoo! group dedicated to firmware hacks if you're too lazy to do one yourself. I think I'm going to hack together a firmware image that uses mp3q so that I can get my bigass server machine out of the living room. Stay tuned if you're digging what I'm shoveling.
